Paver installation and repair in Redwood City

Old brick walkway covered in moss, with uneven bricks and a section dug outBefore

Same walkway. The old mossy brick came out and new pavers went in along the wall.

Pavers fail from the bottom up. When the base under them is thin or water sits underneath, sections sink, tip and pull apart, and weeds come up through the joints.

Abel's crew works on both ends of that. They build new patios, walkways and steps on a solid base, and they repair old ones by lifting the sunken pavers, fixing the base and the drainage, and setting them back level. The same crew paints houses, so paver work can be done along with an exterior repaint.

How the job goes

  1. Look at the siteAbel checks the area, where the water goes when it rains, and what is under any existing pavers before he quotes.
  2. Build the baseSoil comes out and a gravel base goes in, compacted and sloped so water drains off instead of sitting under the pavers.
  3. Set and finishPavers are laid and cut to fit, the joints are filled with sand, and the surface is compacted. Sealing is added if you want it.

Paver patios and walkways

A patio or walkway is only as good as what is under it. The crew digs out the soft soil, puts in a compacted base and sets the pavers with enough slope that rain runs off.

Edges are held in place so the pavers do not creep outward over time.

Paver steps

Steps take more care than flat paving, because every tread has to be level and every riser the same height. Paver steps can be built new or added to a patio or walkway.

Sunken or uneven pavers

Most sunken pavers do not need replacing. The pavers in the low spot are lifted, the base under them is filled and compacted, and the same pavers go back in level. Cracked pavers are swapped for matching ones where they can be found.

Drainage around pavers

Water that pools on a patio, or runs toward the house, is usually a slope problem. The crew can regrade the base so water runs away from the house and add drainage where the ground needs it.

Paver sealing

Sealing helps pavers resist stains and keeps the joint sand in place. The pavers are cleaned first and the joints refilled, then the sealer goes on.

Questions people ask

How much does a paver patio cost?

It depends on the size, the material, how much digging the base needs and how easy the space is to get to. Concrete pavers usually cost less than brick or flagstone. Abel quotes after he sees the space.

Can sunken pavers be fixed without replacing them?

Usually, yes. The pavers are lifted, the base underneath is rebuilt and compacted, and the same pavers are set back level. Only broken pavers need replacing.

Should pavers be sealed?

It is optional. Sealing makes pavers easier to keep clean, helps them resist stains and keeps the joint sand from washing out. Pavers are cleaned before they are sealed.

Concrete pavers, brick or flagstone?

Concrete pavers come in the most shapes and colors and are the easiest to repair. Brick has a classic look. Flagstone is natural stone with irregular shapes. Abel can lay any of them and will tell you what suits your space.

Do you do paver work in other cities?

Yes. Most Creative Painting works across Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont, Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside and nearby Peninsula cities.
